Sweet liberty! One of my favorite PS4-era shooters is back with a whole new perspective and it’s up to me and my friends to defend Super Earth in glorious co-op! After going hands-on with Helldivers 2 for three hours, I’m sold on the bold pivot from the original’s top-down view to the sequel’s new third-person perspective, the appetizing roster of deadly gadgets, and the outrageous comedic tone that expertly channels the low-budget action film vibes that pair perfectly with the developer’s live-service ambitions.

Helldivers 2 ditches the iconic twin-stick shooter gameplay of the first game and completely replaces it with a new third-person over-the-shoulder view. While we’ll have to wait and see which Helldivers game did it better, being down below where the action will undoubtedly intensify things.

Helldivers always made it feel like you were expendable assets to the Super Earth elites, as you could respawn with the resources you’re provided in the game.

Helldivers 2 takes place a century after the events of the first game, with Super Earth having emerged victorious against its adversaries – the deadly, bug-like Terminids, the grotesque Cyborgs and the inscrutable Illuminates.

This would be a disaster in Call of Duty, but here it simply adds to the ongoing pastiche of ludicrous, senseless sci-fi violence. It’s telling that one of the automatic phrases on the communication wheel is “sorry”. You’re going to need that a lot

Warriors are the conterraneo end result of a species optimized for mindless expansion. In controlled environments, they have eviscerated innocent baby cows in under a second. One can only imagine what they would do to innocent baby humans.

Why doesn’t this get tired really quickly? Because Arrowhead has concentrated all its design attention on making every facet of the experience minutely enjoyable. The guns feel chunky, varied and impactful, every direct hit is accompanied by a tidal wave of insect goo or tangled metal, the sounds of missile strikes and napalm blasts are like Helldivers 2 Gameplay fiery symphonies of destruction. This is a game that truly understands the value of intense, disproportionate feedback.

Also, the game being in live-service means that you get rewards playing more as well as different missions to strive for and do. This was the missing piece in the first game, and I think they pulled it off quite well.

Helldivers 2 is a mighty fun time especially with friends, family, and anyone you might want to “accidentally” flatten with a supply package.

As you play Helldivers 2, you'll be tasked with completing daily Personal Orders with simple objectives like "kill 200 Terminids," as well as weekly, community-wide Major Orders that challenge the game's entire player base to complete enough missions on the planets listed to liberate them.

Experiment with different weapons. A shotgun might not sound effective for certain enemies, but a shotgun with a nice range upgrade is a different story.
